The exhibition intends to investigate the theme of multiple identity in its relationship with art and with the issue of the author. The figure of the double, which arises in literature, is also immediately a reflection on art making, on the relationship of the artist with his other self. The doubling process is indeed ingrained in the production of art, which incessantly proposes the break between the author of the work and the author in the work, a double that can never be resolved in an identity nor in a complete separation. All the discourses provided with the author-function imply a plurality of self, and where the artist reflects on the problem of identity and on the fleeting sense of self, his status of author, the relationship between self and art making, is brought into question. Art offers itself in this sense as the image of a problematic and at the same time productive relationship with the fragmented nature of the ego. Fictitious characters, alter ego, disguise and mirroring are some of the strategies used to disconcert a unitary notion of the self. The exhibition presents the work of artists in whom the theme of the double not only has a thematic centrality, but in which it is functional to a critical investigation into the authorís role in his relationship with subjectivity, and where the double involves and contaminates the totality of art making.
